SIBU: Federal Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Chang Lih Kang has acknowledged that Sarawak has set a role model for Peninsular Malaysia to emulate for racial unity and harmony.
He said Sarawak is doing very well in term of unity among all the races.
” So, I urge my comrades and friends from Peninsular Malaysia to learn from Sarawak or Borneo, of course,” he said at the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Central Zone Chinese New Year gathering and dinner 2025 hosted by PKR Lanang branch at Joystar Restaurant in Sg. Merah here on Saturday.
Chang, who is also PKR vice president, reiterated that in a statement on Friday, after listening to all constructive criticisms and opinions, the federal Cabinet has already made a decision to set aside the so-called JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) guidelines on Muslim participation in non-Muslim religious and cultural events.
The proposed guidelines, he pointed out, which is just being discussed, has been shelved.
JAKIM is reportedly in the final stages of drafting guidelines on Muslim participation in non-Muslim regIlious festivities, including funeral rites and visits to places of worship.
These guidelines are also reportedly to address activities deemed to “offend” Muslim sensitivities, including religious speeches, songs, the distribution of religious materials, and performances that may be perceived as mocking Islamic beliefs.
Chang, also Member of Parliament for Tanjong Malim, announced he would allocate a sum of RM30,000 for PKR Sarawak to be distributed to affected flood areas for mitigation programme.
He said his personal allocation is just to help the flood victims.
Various entertainment programmes were held including lion dance, cultural dance performances, red packets for children, lucky draws and karaoke presentations by the locals.
Among those present were PKR Lanang branch chairman, Michael Lee Meng Ting, PKR Lanang branch deputy chairman, Hung Soon Kieng and PKR Lanang Youth Chief, Wong Sing Han who is also the organising chairman.
