KUCHING: With just over a week until Christmas, the festive warmth is already being felt as various programmes and activities take place across the community.
In many locations, Christmas trees are adorned with a variety of ornaments, ranging from colourful lights to statues depicting the birth of Jesus Christ. In the city, shopping malls like tHe Spring Shopping Mall and Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall showcase attractive Christmas displays, featuring light shows and art exhibitions.
Additionally, Christmas markets offer a wide array of gifts and handicrafts, drawing visitors from all walks of life.
This year’s Christmas celebration is made even more meaningful by the spirit of unity, love, and humanity demonstrated by the community. In these increasingly challenging times, Christmas serves as a reminder to cherish true values and bring peace and hope to others.
Sarawak Tribune spoke with several individuals to learn more about their perspectives on celebrating Christmas in 2024.

Ferrentini Silvester, 24
Christmas is very special because it is not just about giving and receiving gifts but also about strengthening the bonds of family and friendship. It is a time to reflect on the values of love, joy, and sacrifice that bring us closer to the people we cherish.
I usually celebrate Christmas with family and friends by having dinner together. We often exchange gifts and gather at family homes to share stories, laugh, and enjoy traditional dishes. The meaning of Christmas reminds me of the importance of giving — not only in the form of gifts but also through love and attention. It offers me an opportunity to appreciate what I have and reflect on the values of family, friendship, and generosity in everyday life.
This year, I hope to celebrate Christmas with more peace and meaning. I plan to spend more time with my family, free from the distractions of phones and other devices. We will focus on talking and sharing experiences — something I have not done enough of in previous Christmas celebrations.

Christmas is not just about gifts; it is about showing love, appreciating those around us, and bringing a little happiness to those in need. It has a significant impact on my life because it highlights the values of love, sacrifice, and generosity. Every time I celebrate Christmas, I am reminded to be more considerate of others and to give sincerely — whether through gifts or emotional support.
This year, compared to previous ones, I plan to focus more on the spiritual aspect of Christmas. I want to attend more religious events and reflect deeply on its true meaning, while reminding myself to be grateful for all that I have.

Christmas Day is a time to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. I love the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree and singing carols with my family. These moments bring a sense of warmth and peace that is hard to find throughout the year.
The meaning of Christmas has a profound effect on me because it is a time to reflect on values such as peace, love, and hope. Every Christmas, I feel closer to my faith and more inspired to help those in need.
This year, I plan to have a smaller, more intimate Christmas celebration. Compared to previous years, which were more festive, I want to focus on meaningful conversations with my loved ones and sharing a meal together without too much preparation or elaborate celebrations.

Ayremeineil Ganya, 22
Christmas is special to me because it is a day filled with religious and familial significance. I deeply value the precious moments I spend with my family and friends. It is a time to give, love, and celebrate the peace in life.
For me, Christmas serves as a reminder of the importance of cherishing moments with my family. It has a positive impact, teaching me to dedicate more time and attention to the people I love and to prioritise values such as patience and tolerance in my daily life.
This year, I hope to involve more people in the Christmas celebration, especially friends and neighbours who may not be as close to my family. I plan to host a community dinner, aiming to build stronger relationships with those around me.

Christmas is a time to gather with loved ones and celebrate the spirit of the season. For an immigrant, it is even more special because it offers a rare opportunity to spend quality time with family.
Christmas is particularly meaningful to me because it allows me to reconnect with my loved ones. As an immigrant, it is often difficult to participate in activities organised during the Christmas season, so this time becomes even more precious.
The festive season for me usually includes visiting the homes of family and friends, attending religious services at church, and enjoying the joyful tradition of exchanging gifts. Christmas decorations, such as beautifully adorned trees and twinkling lights, enhance the festive atmosphere, making life feel both happier and calmer during this time.
Christmas is not only about celebrating but also about creating lasting memories with family and cherishing unity and peace during the most wonderful time of the year.
