KUCHING: A vice president of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Squad Samarahan branch was fined RM1,500 by the Magistrates’ Court here after pleading guilty to taking a dangerous drug.
Nur Aiman Al-Hakim Yushri, 25, faces two months’ imprisonment in default of payment.
He was also ordered to undergo two years’ supervision at the Kota Samarahan police station.
The offence was committed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, upon conviction, along with mandatory supervision.
According to the facts of the case, the accused was arrested on Jan 1 at about 3.40am at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) of the Sarawak Contingent Police headquarters.
Nur Aiman was subsequently escorted for a urine test. Initial screening conducted by the police returned a positive result for ketamine.
The urine sample was later sent to the Chemistry Department, where analysis confirmed the presence of ketamine, a substance listed under the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
A police report on the incident was lodged at the Satok police station.
In mitigation, the accused claimed that he believed he was smoking a normal cigarette and was unaware that it contained drugs, adding that he had been influenced by a friend.
However, Senior Assistant Registrar Mohammad Fauzi Acho reprimanded the accused, noting that he held an important position in society.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng prosecuted while Nur Aiman was unrepresented.
