KUCHING: Minister of National Unity, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, has strongly condemned any form of violence, discrimination or prejudice that can harm racial harmony.

Aaron was responding to a recent incident in which an X user, Elijah, claimed that he was slapped by an elderly man while eating at a convenience store in a shopping mall in Johor Bahru during Ramadan despite explaining that he was a non-Muslim.

Before slapping him, the man had asked Elijah for his identity card as proof.

According to Elijah, the man’s son subsequently came forward to calm the situation and apologise for his father’s behaviour.

Commented Aaron on hs X account yesterday, “This incident that has occurred is a provocation that does not reflect the spirit of unity and harmony in our multi-racial country.

“Such actions must be stopped immediately and not allowed to develop in a country that upholds the principles of the Rukun Negara.

“I hope that all Malaysians will be civilised in their interactions with other Malaysians, who should always respect each other’s cultures and practise the values of understanding, respect and acceptance,” he said.

He added that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would investigate the case under Section 323 of the Penal Code, following a report filed by Elijah at the Tampoi Police Station.

“I hope that all parties will cooperate and leave it entirely to the PDRM to conduct the investigation,” he said.

He stressed that issues regarding unity could not be taken lightly.

“We cannot allow any incident that could destroy the harmony of Malaysians. This country will only progress if we are united, respect each other, and live in peace without any form of racial or religious tension,” said Aaron.
