KUCHING: Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik ended Malaysia’s 19-year title drought in a fairy-tale run by clinching the men’s doubles crown at the Thailand Open today.
The World No. 4 pair triumphed over Denmark’s William Kryger Boe and Christian Faust Kjær with a convincing 21-17, 21-12 win in the final held at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.
The last time Malaysia lifted the men’s doubles title at the Thailand Open was in 2009, when Chan Peng Soon and Lim Khim Wah emerged victorious.
This victory marks Aaron and Wooi Yik’s first Super 500 title and their second tournament win this year, following their success at the Badminton Asia Championships in April.
The pair received a mock cheque of $37,525 (approximately RM161,207.31), along with a trophy and medals.
They are also set to climb to World No. 3 in the upcoming rankings.
In a match that lasted an hour, the Malaysians faced a challenging start, narrowly conceding the first game to the Danes in a 20-22 set loss.
However, after making swift tactical adjustments, Aaron and Wooi Yik bounced back to take the second game 21-17, levelling the match.
They then dominated the third set, showcasing their superior form and outplaying the Danes, who struggled to mount an effective counterattack.
Aaron and Wooi Yik sealed the title with a commanding 21-12 win in the final set.
This victory also marks Malaysia’s second title win at the 2025 Thailand Open after Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah made history by becoming the first Malaysians to win the women’s doubles title after triumphing over South Korea’s Jeong Na Eun and Lee Yeon Woo in straight sets, 21-16, 21-17 earlier.
