BANGKOK: Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik were denied SEA Games gold after going down in straight sets to Indonesia’s Sabar Gutama–Moh Reza Isfahani in the final here today (Dec 14).
The world number 2 combination struggled to impose themselves against the aggressive and disciplined play of the Indonesian duo, ranked eighth in the world, as they went down 14–21 in the opening game at the Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus.
Relentless pressure and swift attacking exchanges from Gutama–Isfahani kept the Malaysians on the back foot, preventing Aaron–Wooi Yik from finding their usual rhythm.
The Malaysian pair showed improved composure in the second game, trading points with their opponents in a series of intense rallies early on, but the Indonesians maintained control of the tempo at crucial moments.
Despite a late push, Aaron–Wooi Yik were unable to turn the tide, with Gutama–Isfahani closing out the match 21–17 to secure the men’s doubles gold medal for Indonesia.
The defeat saw Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik settle for the silver medal, marking a strong overall campaign that included a place in the final of one of the tournament’s most competitive events.
Their runners-up finish remains a commendable achievement, coming against opponents in top form and underlining Malaysia’s continued presence among the leading nations in men’s doubles.
Aaron–Wooi Yik will now turn their attention to the BWF World Tour Finals 2025 in Hangzhou, China, scheduled from Dec 17 to Dec 21, where they will look to bounce back and end the year on a high note.
