SUZHOU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg visited the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) today, where he received an in-depth briefing on the park’s development strategies, innovation ecosystem and governance framework, elements that have propelled SIP into one of China’s most successful and globally renowned industrial zones.
Established in 1994 as a landmark bilateral collaboration between China and Singapore, SIP has evolved into a world-class demonstration zone for high-tech development, international cooperation and sustainable urban planning.
Over the past three decades, it has attracted major global enterprises while cultivating a dynamic environment for research and development (R&D), digital transformation and advanced manufacturing.
SIP is widely lauded for its smart city integration, efficient administrative systems and innovative township planning that combines residential, commercial and industrial components into a cohesive and sustainable living environment.
Its achievements have made it a benchmark for many countries and regions seeking to model similar economic zones.
During the visit, the Premier and the Sarawak delegation were taken on an extensive guided tour of the SIP Exhibition Centre.
They were briefed on SIP’s development milestones, policy frameworks, investment facilitation mechanisms and the long-term strategies that underpin its economic resilience and global competitiveness.
The delegation also viewed interactive exhibits showcasing SIP’s digital governance tools, environmental management practices and collaborative R&D platforms.
The visit provided valuable insights into development models that align closely with Sarawak’s ongoing transformation under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, particularly in the areas of digital economy, green energy transition, advanced manufacturing and sustainable urban development.
Among those accompanying the Premier were Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy & PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo, and PETROS Group chief executive officer Datuk Janin Girie.
The visit to SIP marks another key highlight of the Premier’s working trip to China as Sarawak explores partnerships that can support its long-term economic aspirations.
