TOKYO, Japan: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg arrived here on Sunday night for a two-day official working visit.
He is set to receive one of Japan’s highest honours from Emperor Naruhito – The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star – on Tuesday.
Abang Johari arrived at Narita International Airport at 8:50 pm local time, where he was welcomed by Malaysia’s Ambassador to Japan, Datuk Shahril Effendi Abdul Ghany.
Upon arrival at his hotel, he was greeted by Sarawak Forest Department Director, Datuk Hamden Mohammad, and other members of the delegation.
During the visit, the Premier is scheduled to deliver a keynote address marking the 30th anniversary of cooperation between the Japanese Malaysia Association (JMA) and the Sarawak Forest Department – a partnership that has driven joint tropical rainforest rehabilitation projects for three decades.
The highlight of the visit will be the conferment of The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by Emperor Naruhito, recognising Abang Johari’s outstanding contribution in strengthening strategic ties between Japan and Malaysia.
He is among the recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations announced earlier by the government of Japan.
The award honours his exceptional efforts in promoting regional exchange and fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.
Abang Johari has played a key role in advancing economic and energy cooperation, particularly in renewable energy sectors such as hydrogen and ammonia.
He has also strengthened partnerships with major Japanese corporations to ensure long-term energy security through stable liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply.
Beyond energy, the Premier has spearheaded joint initiatives with Japanese universities and organisations in forest conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable development – in line with Sarawak’s vision as a green energy-driven state.
His leadership has also enhanced academic and youth exchanges, laying a strong foundation for enduring friendship and collaboration between Japan and Sarawak.
