KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been named ‘Newsmaker of the Year’ and ‘Favourite Guest of the Year’ by the popular weekly podcast ‘Keluar Sekejap’ hosted by former Malaysian politician Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan.

In their 137th episode aired on Dec 20, Khairy praised Abang Johari’s leadership, which had brought significant changes to Sarawak — and Malaysia.

“If we look at how Sarawak has charted its future, from acquiring a significant stake in Affin Bank, taking over Bintulu Port from the federal government, to its aspirations of establishing its own airline through MASwings it reflects his extraordinary vision,” said Khairy, who is also the former health minister.

Khairy said Abang Johari was able to address critical issues, such as the distribution of gas between Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), as evidence of his  ability to fight for Sarawak’s rights.

Meanwhile, for Shahril, he named Abang Johari as the ‘Favourite Guest of the Year’ for the podcast.

“I feel that our interview with Abang Johari left an important impression. We could see how clear he is about what he wants to achieve for his state.

“And to your (Khairy) point about being the ‘Newsmaker of the Year’, Abang Johari has accomplished so much in 2024,” he said.

Shahril also said it was a big privilege for him and Khairy to be able to interview the Premier in Sarawak.

Abang Johari was first featured as the special guest on the ‘Keluar Sekejap’ (KS) podcast on July 22, 2024 in celebration of Sarawak Day.

In that episode, the Premier touched on several key issues including Sarawak’s role within Malaysia, claims under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), and future of the state.
