KUCHING: The Premier received high praise from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) backbenchers for his unwavering courage and decisive leadership in safeguarding Sarawak’s rights and steering the state toward sustained progress.

At the GPS Backbenchers Night themed ‘One For All, All For One (Sarawak First)’ held at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) last night (May 27), Chief Political Secretary to the Premier Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman commended Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s resolute stance in asserting Sarawak’s constitutional and economic interests.

“The Premier took a firm stand when it was needed most, and we, the people of Sarawak, will always be grateful for that bravery.

“You have shown the way and proven that it can be done. Your courage continues to guide us,”Fazzrudin said in his speech.

He cited the introduction of the State Sales Tax (SST) in 2019 and the 2023 enactment of laws regulating natural gas as landmark achievements that reflect the Premier’s political boldness and strategic foresight.

“These were not easy decisions, but they were necessary. Today, we are seeing the tangible benefits of these moves reaching the people,” he said.

He noted that such bold initiatives have fortified Sarawak’s economic independence and reinforced its legal jurisdiction over key resources.

Fazzrudin also acknowledged the complexity surrounding the ongoing negotiations between Sarawak’s petroleum company PETROS and national oil firm PETRONAS, reflecting the Premier’s deep involvement and commitment.

“We understand that last week, the Premier was fully engaged with important matters, including the PETROS-PETRONAS agreement,” he said.

“This is not a simple issue. It demands thorough analysis and mature leadership and for that, we say thank you, Premier.”

Fazzrudin also thanked the Deputy Speaker and the DUN staff for ensuring the smooth conduct of the recent seven-day sitting, and urged more active participation from ministers and deputy ministers in future legislative programmes.
