SIBU: A proposal to establish a new headquarters complex for the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) has received a positive response from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari, who is also SABERKAS adviser, said the proposal needed to be studied, particularly in terms of cost, adding that the government would not allow SABERKAS to bear the entire cost if the amount involved was reasonable.
“I heard the speech by SABERKAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah about the proposed new complex to be established in the Petra Jaya area.
“So, try it first. If the price is reasonable, I will not let SABERKAS bear 100 per cent of the cost. I also know and understand,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the opening ceremony of the 18th Sarawak SABERKAS Triennial General Assembly at a hotel here today (Aug 9).
He said the proposed complex could provide greater support for SABERKAS to continue its role in the community, particularly in youth development.
“Hopefully, it can encourage the community and the youth to continue what has been set by the leadership today. Tomorrow’s leadership must continue, perhaps doing better than today’s leadership,” he stressed.
Earlier, Abdul Karim said in his speech that SABERKAS would consult the Land and Survey Department (JTS) to identify a suitable location for the construction of the complex, either in Kuching or Petra Jaya.
“God willing, with such an asset, we will be able to grow further and do something better than what we are doing now,” he said.
