KUCHING: The Sikh community at Gurdwara Sahib Kuching here will receive an interactive smartboard to enhance learning opportunities for its children, as part of the Sarawak Government’s efforts to promote digital learning.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the interactive smartboard, worth about RM10,000, would be his contribution to the Sikh temple following the opening ceremony of its extended premises.

“Today, in this new era, we have what we call smartboard. Each smartboard currently costs about RM10,000. I think every classroom should be equipped with one, and I would like to contribute a smartboard to your temple.

“This will allow your children to access a wide range of educational resources available in this modern era,” he said during the opening ceremony at Gudwara Sahib Kuching, Jalan Masjid here today.

Abang Johari said the contribution was in line with the state’s broader plan to equip schools with smartboards, particularly those with internet connectivity, through Yayasan Sarawak.

The Premier said digital learning platforms such as Khan Academy offered extensive educational resources, particularly in science-based subjects, which could help nurture more professionals in science and technology-related fields.

He also highlighted the growing importance of engineering expertise, particularly as Sarawak explored potential international cooperation in emerging industries.

He said the Russian ambassador had recently expressed interest in exploring cooperation with Sarawak in rocket launches, citing the state’s strategic location near the equator.

“What was his interest? He wanted to explore cooperation in launching rockets from Sarawak. Because we are located near the equator, Sarawak offers a very suitable location for rocket launches.

“I told him that we would need engineers. We can work together and collaborate to produce more engineers.

“I know the Sikh community has many capable and talented people. I believe you can help us produce more engineers, together with members of other communities.

“That is another reason why I am contributing to this smartboard. With a smartboard, you can simply search online and access a wealth of information,” he added.

Abang Johari also commended the Sikh community and other religious communities for maintaining harmony and mutual respect despite their different faiths.

“Although we belong to different faiths, we live together under one roof, just like one big family. There is no difference between us, and that is the spirit we want to uphold,” he said.
