TOKYO: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been conferred ‘The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star’ by Emperor Naruhito, an honour he said belongs not only to him but to all Sarawakians.

Receiving the award as part of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations, Abang Johari described it as recognition of Sarawak’s efforts to strengthen economic cooperation and pioneer new energy and technology sectors.

“I humbly express my deepest gratitude for this award. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with the Emperor of Japan, who expressed pride in the strong ties between Malaysia and Japan.

“I also introduced Sarawak to His Majesty, who was already aware of the state’s ongoing initiatives in developing a new and progressive economy,” he told the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) and TVS after receiving the award from Emperor Naruhito today.

Abang Johari said the international recognition demonstrated that the world acknowledged the success of Sarawak’s development policies, particularly in exploring new frontiers that emphasise environmental sustainability and the well-being of its people.

“What matters most is that they recognise Sarawak’s transition towards a new economy in this modern era. We are moving alongside other nations that are advancing sustainable policies and improving people’s livelihoods,” he added.

The Premier expressed hope that the prestigious award would inspire young Sarawakians to continue striving for excellence on the global stage.

“I am grateful to be the only recipient from Borneo, and very few have received such recognition. This means that if Sarawakians focus on new frontiers and achieve success, the world will recognise us,” he added.

He also revealed that Sarawak is exploring potential collaboration with Japan in the field of fusion energy, following Japan’s successful trial of the new energy source in July.

“Yesterday, I had discussions with the President of the Japan Malaysia Association, who will bring the matter to the Japanese Prime Minister.

“I will also discuss the potential cooperation with our Prime Minister. We want to explore this new energy source together with Japan as part of Sarawak’s green economy agenda,” he said.

He asserted that the initiative was in line with Sarawak’s aspiration to develop a new economy driven by innovation, technology, and sustainable energy.
