KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has brushed aside speculation over the dissolution of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN), saying his focus remains on ensuring the people benefit from the state’s economic growth.

He said his priority was to generate more wealth for the people and enable them to participate in Sarawak’s rapidly expanding economy rather than thinking about the next state election.

“I am not thinking about the election yet. I am thinking about how to give more money to the people so they can share in our rapidly developing economy.

“So, my mind is not on the election for now,” he said.

Abang Johari said this when met by reporters after announcing ASSAR’s final dividend for the financial year ended June 30, 2026, at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here today (July 13).

Asked whether the state government would wait until the current DUN completed its full term, Abang Johari replied that there was no need to speculate.

“It ends in February. Just wait until February.

“If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” he said.

Responding to claims that Barisan Nasional (BN) was pressuring the Sarawak government to dissolve the DUN, Abang Johari dismissed the suggestion.

“That’s up to them. We have our own way,” he said.

The current five-year term of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly is due to expire in February 2027.

The Premier had previously said the election would proceed using the existing 82-seat configuration if the Election Commission’s (EC) electoral boundary redelineation exercise to create 17 additional constituencies is not completed in time.
