MIRI: Sarawak must move beyond its traditional dependence on oil and gas and build its next economy around technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, energy and advanced research, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said.
Addressing the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Zone Special Convention here today, Abang Johari said Sarawak’s future economic competitiveness would depend increasingly on its ability to develop technology and human capital.
He pointed to the state’s growing involvement in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), satellite technology, renewable energy and research as evidence of the economic transformation already under way.
He said Sarawak was preparing to launch a nanosatellite developed and operated by Sarawakian scientists to collect data that could be used for planning and managing the state.
The Premier also highlighted Sarawak’s semiconductor capabilities and its efforts to develop expertise in advanced microchip technology.
He said these sectors would create new opportunities for younger Sarawakians as the global economy increasingly shifts towards AI, automation and advanced manufacturing.
“Selagi Tuhan memberi akal kepada kita, gunakanlah akal,” he said, stressing the need for Sarawak to make full use of its human capital and technological capabilities.
Abang Johari said Sarawak had already been recognised as a high-income economy since 2022, but stressed that higher state income must ultimately translate into better household incomes.
He said the answer lay in education and empowering younger generations.
The state government’s free tertiary education initiative, he said, was intended to ensure children from all backgrounds could gain access to university education.
“Only education can change the problem of poverty,” he said.
The Premier also highlighted Sarawak’s energy transition, including hydropower, solar and other renewable energy sources, saying the state’s energy resources could become a major economic advantage.
He said Sarawak’s economic strategy was ultimately about creating higher-value industries and ensuring the benefits returned to its people.
