KAPIT: The Baleh Hydroelectric Dam project remains a focal point in Sarawak’s push to scale up its renewable energy transition.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg visited the project site to review its current implementation progress today.

He arrived at the dam site around 11 am, accompanied by Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Utility and Telecommunication Deputy Minister (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.

Also joining the working visit were Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

Kapit Division Resident Elvis Didit and Sarawak Energy’s top management, including chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, also welcomed the visiting delegation.

The delegation was brought on a tour of the construction site led by Sarawak Energy’s project team and relevant government agencies.

The Baleh Hydroelectric Dam forms a key part of Sarawak Energy’s long-term strategy to boost renewable energy capacity and drive the state’s ambitions as a leading sustainable energy producer in Southeast Asia.

Once operational, the dam will generate up to 1,285 Megawatts (MW) of electricity, making it the fourth major hydroelectric facility in Sarawak.

Sarawak’s first hydroelectric project was the 100 MW Batang Ai Dam in Sri Aman, commissioned in 1985, followed by the Bakun Dam in Belaga, which began operations in 2014 with a capacity ranging from 1,700 MW to 2,110 MW.

The third was the Murum Dam, also located in Belaga, which came online in 2015 and is capable of producing between 635 MW and 944 MW.
