KUCHING: The eight-year leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been marked by transformative policies and initiatives that have set the course for Sarawak’s development in key areas.

Political analyst Dr Lee Kuok Tiung highlighted Abang Johari’s governance as a blend of pragmatism and foresight, particularly in his focus on sustainable development, economic independence, and state autonomy.

“Abang Johari is recognized for his emphasis on sustainable development and technological integration. His administration has shown pragmatism in addressing both immediate needs and long-term goals, particularly in navigating post-pandemic recovery and climate change challenges.

“His leadership reflects a strategic focus on economic independence and state autonomy,” he said when contacted by Sarawak Tribune.

Dr Lee said among the notable achievements by Abang Johari is the acceleration of infrastructure projects such as the Pan Borneo Highway and rural road networks, which aim to bridge the urban-rural divide and enhance connectivity across the state.

“Addressing income inequality and ensuring equitable development remain persistent issues.

“He put efforts into bridging urban-rural divides, emphasizing infrastructure and basic service accessibility for rural populations, and accelerated the Pan Borneo Highway and other rural road projects to improve regional connectivity,” he said.

He also said that the Premier had championed Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) while maintaining constructive relationships with the federal government.

“He successfully advocated greater devolution of power to Sarawak in areas like education and healthcare and secured more petroleum revenue shares for Sarawak.

“Abang Johari also introduced the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy 2018-2022 to diversify Sarawak’s economy by reducing dependency on traditional sectors like oil and gas, driving investment in technology, innovation, and digital infrastructure.

“The initiative has expanded broadband coverage and addressed the digital divide under the Sarawak Multimedia Authority, fostering digital transformation.

“Abang Johari’s push for renewable energy, particularly through hydrogen energy initiatives, shows a commitment to sustainability while diversifying the state’s energy sources,” Dr Lee said.

He added that as Sarawak aims to launch its own airline, it is a move that underscores Abang Johari’s focus on strengthening the state’s connectivity and economic capacity.
