KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that he and his family will not hold an Aidilfitri open house this year, as a mark of respect for the late Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, who passed away less than a year ago.
In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 message, Abang Johari said, “As a personal note of respect for the late Datuk Amar Hajjah Juma’ani, my family and I will not hold an Aidilfitri open house this year. Nevertheless, my family and I wish everyone a Happy Aidilfitri, asking for forgiveness for any wrongs. May this Syawal brings happiness, strengthen unity, and increase blessings in our lives.”
He also emphasised the importance of unity and harmony in the state’s progress.
“In pursuing progress, we must not neglect the values of unity and harmony that form the foundation of Sarawak’s strength. Aidilfitri is the best time to strengthen ties, forgive one another, and appreciate the diversity that is Sarawak’s identity.
“The tradition of open houses symbolises inclusivity and goodwill among communities, reflecting our unique ability to live in diversity yet remain united,” he said.
On leadership and future responsibilities, Abang Johari added that the leadership of the Sarawak Government humbly seeks forgiveness for any shortcomings.
“I am aware that the responsibility entrusted is significant. God willing, I will continue to work with full commitment and integrity to ensure Sarawak advances as a prosperous, progressive, and respected state. May Sarawak continue to be peaceful, stable, progressive, and prosperous for today’s generation and the generations to come,” he said.
He also reflected on his interactions with the people throughout Ramadan: “Throughout the past Ramadan, I had the opportunity to be with the people in various Ihya’ Ramadan programmes, including enlivening the Surau at Satria Pertiwi Complex, attending breaking-of-fast events, performing Maghrib, Isha, and Tarawih prayers in congregation with various ministries, departments, and Sarawak government agencies, supporting the needy and orphans, and participating in welfare programmes and distribution of aid to those in need.”
Abang Johari highlighted his engagement with Sarawakians outside the state, and described it was very meaningful as it demonstrated that wherever Sarawakians may be, the familial bonds, Sarawakian spirit, and love for the homeland, Bumi Kenyalang, remain strong.
“In addition, I attended the Sarawak-level Nuzul Al-Quran celebration in Sri Aman and broke fast with the community in Gedong. Each of these meetings provided me the opportunity to hear firsthand the pulse of the people — their hopes, challenges, and aspirations — as well as to assess the effectiveness of the policies and initiatives implemented by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government,” he concluded.
