KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has made significant strides in advancing Sarawak’s economy since 2017, says Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) president Datuk Abang Helmi Ikhwan.

He pointed out that under Abang Johari’s guidance, Sarawak has seen remarkable developments that have positively impacted the state’s business landscape.

“His administration has been instrumental in promoting a digital economy through the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy.

“This initiative has not only enhanced digital infrastructure but has also empowered local entrepreneurs to embrace e-commerce and innovation, paving the way for a more competitive business environment,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

As sustainability has been a key focus on the Premier’s agenda, he said that the commitment to renewable energy, particularly through hydropower projects, has established Sarawak as a leader in clean energy within Malaysia.

This dedication to sustainable practices, he stressed, is crucial for attracting investments and ensuring long-term economic resilience.

“Infrastructure improvements have also been a hallmark of the Premier’s tenure. Enhanced connectivity through upgraded roads, bridges, and airports has facilitated trade and investment, making Sarawak a more attractive destination for both domestic and foreign investors. This infrastructure development is vital for the growth of our local businesses.

“Moreover, the Premier’s efforts to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been commendable.

“Through various programs offering financial assistance, training, and market access, many local businesses have flourished, creating jobs and contributing to the economic diversity of our state.”

Looking forward, he urged Abang Johari to continue focusing on several key areas to further strengthen Sarawak’s business community.

He emphasised the importance of enhanced support for SMEs, noting that continued emphasis on funding and mentorship for local businesses is essential for driving economic diversification and resilience.

Abang Helmi also highlighted the focus on investment in education and skills development as aligning educational programmes with industry needs will ensure that our workforce is equipped with the necessary skills for emerging sectors.

“Other than that, the Premier should continue on promoting sustainable practice by encouraging businesses to adopt environmentally friendly practices. This in turn, will enhance our competitiveness and appeal to conscious consumers.”

Following this, he pointed out the importance of strengthening trade relations by advocating for the expansion of trade agreements and partnerships to open new markets for Sarawakian products and benefit local businesses.

“There is also the need to focus on infrastructure for future growth. This is because the ongoing investment in infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, is crucial for ensuring equitable economic growth throughout Sarawak.”

He also emphasised the value of encouraging research and development (R&D) asserting that supporting R&D initiatives will drive innovation and improve productivity across various sectors.

“All in all, the Premier’s leadership has laid a strong foundation for Sarawak’s economic growth over the past eight years.

“By continuing to prioritise these areas, we can build a vibrant and resilient business community that will thrive in the years to come,” Abang Helmi said.
