MIRI: Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, paid a visit today to the WAK Miri Festival 2025 at the Miri Handicraft Centre.
He was warmly welcomed by organisers, participants and members of the city’s energetic and diverse creative community.
Now in its second edition, WAK Miri is a citywide celebration of arts, culture and lifestyle, running from June 13 to 15.
The festival features a rich and dynamic mix of performances, exhibitions, workshops and community-driven showcases, bringing together talents from across Sarawak to ignite Miri’s cultural pulse.
“I commend the Miri creative community for stepping up and taking part in this exciting WAK Miri edition.
“I urge all arts, culture and lifestyle lovers to come out and enjoy the amazing performances and programmes staged by our talented local artists.
“Congratulations to the WAK organisers for once again putting together a fantastic satellite festival for Northern Sarawak,” he said.
“This year’s featured programmes include ‘All About Arts: Elements of Nature’, a visually striking exhibition that presents nature-inspired works by local artists; Music Portal, a curated platform that gives local musicians and bands the opportunity to perform live, energising Miri’s music scene with fresh talent; and Emily of Emerald Hill, a compelling solo theatre performance of the iconic Peranakan monodrama, presented in Miri for the first time,” he said.
Adding to the excitement is the Creative Marketplace, a vibrant showcase of Sarawakian craftsmanship, lifestyle products, and culinary delights.
Meanwhile, ‘Workshops and Fringe Activities’ offer engaging community-based sessions in storytelling, heritage crafts, and movement arts, conducted at various venues throughout the city.
WAK Miri is part of the broader What About Kuching (WAK) Festival movement, which has become a key driver of community-led creative expression in Sarawak.
The seventh edition of the main WAK Festival is scheduled to take place throughout October 2025 at multiple locations across Kuching.
