Abdul Karim clears the air about PSC’s tasks

KUCHING: The Public Service Commission (PSC) of Sarawak’s role is not just merely to interview, as is the general perception of the public.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the commission is responsible on matters of recruitment and service for members of the federal public service in Sarawak.

Its duties include management of services such as confirmation of appointment, endorsement of initial salary upgrade, extension of probationary period, confirmation of service, and conferment into pensionable status for federal personnel throughout the state.

He said the role of the PSC listed under Article 36 (1) of the Sarawak Constitution.

“Abdul Karim was officiating at the Sarawak Public Service Commission’s Raya-Ngiling Bidai Gawai Dayak event last night (8 June) at Pullman Hotel here”

He was representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Besides that, Abdul Karim said PSC also had to see the best candidates are recruited to enhance the governance of public service in line with Sarawak’s aim to become the leading digital economy and society by 2030.

Therefore, the PSC Sarawak must be proactive and forward looking in its approach, he said.

“We need to embrace the current technology and encourage innovation in our service delivery as well as keep up with the latest trends and developments in the industry.

“The policies, rules and regulations governing ICT must be revised accordingly to ensure the digitisation initiatives can be carried out smoothly,” he said.

Among those present were PSC Sarawak chairman Datuk Dr. Sabariah Putit and Sarawak Financial Secretary Datuk Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar.
