KUCHING: Strong and consistent enforcement is crucial in addressing diesel smuggling and preventing leakages that could disrupt supply and subsidies, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said smuggling activities, particularly in border areas, remain an ongoing concern driven by price differences between regions.

“Smuggling is an open secret. If enforcement is not carried out properly, goods meant for local consumption may be smuggled out, causing shortages and affecting the government’s efforts to provide subsidies,” he said during a press conference at the Sarawak Club here today.

He explained that price disparities create opportunities for illegal cross-border activities, especially when fuel and goods are cheaper locally compared to neighbouring areas.

Abdul Karim said he had only recently received information regarding plans to strengthen enforcement through a coordinated task force, adding that details have yet to be officially announced.

However, he welcomed the move and expressed appreciation to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof for the initiative.

“It is good for the federal government to introduce such guidelines. It shows that we are proactive in monitoring subsidies and ensuring proper control.”

According to a report, an integrated Op Tiris 4.0 task force has been established for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan to combat fuel leakages and smuggling, alongside stricter enforcement and expanded diesel control measures.

Abdul Karim stressed that while policies and subsidy mechanisms are in place, their effectiveness ultimately depends on proper monitoring and enforcement at all levels.

He added that enforcement efforts should be carried out consistently, not only during periods of crisis but also during stable times to prevent recurring issues.
