SARAWAK will see an increase in its elected representatives in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) from the current 82 members to 99.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposed increase in the number of elected representatives is both reasonable and necessary, given the vast geographical expense of Sarawak.

“As the legislative authority in Sarawak, the DUN must remain dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of our people. Over the years we have witnessed significant demographic changes, urban extension and growing demand for equitable representation

“These developments necessitate periodic review of this August house composition to ensure that it continues to reflect the voices and aspiration of all Sarawakians

“It will enhance accessibility to governance. It will ensure the needs and concerns of the rakyat are more efficiently and more effectively addressed and improve service delivery through leadership that is closer and more responsive to the rakyat.

“This proposed increase is also in line with Article 113 (2) (II) of the Federal Constitution which allows for a review of electoral boundaries after an interval of not less than 8 years,” he said when tabling the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025, during the special DUN sitting here today.

He added that the last redelineation exercise in Sarawak was carried out in 2015, that is one year after it was endorsed or the blessing given by this August house.

“Since then, there has been a significant increase in the population and the number of voters especially when eligible voters were reduced from aged 21 to 18.

“This again justifies the need for the creation of new constituencies to ensure that representation in this DUN remains fair and reflects the current situation on the ground,” he said.

Upon passing of this Bill, Abdul Karim said the new ordinance shall come into force on the date to be appointed by the Head of State and the DUN composition of membership ordinance 2014 shall be repealed.

He said the new composition will be implemented in time for the next state election during which voters will elect 99 representatives to this Dewan.

“I firmly believe that this Bill is both timely and essential with our population steadily growing with new townships emerging and the needs of our communities evolving.

“This change ensures that the Dewan remains responsive, relevant and ready to serve every corner of our beloved state with greater efficiency and inclusivity,” he said.
