KUCHING: Works to upgrade Sarawak Stadium for the 2027 SEA Games are on track, with Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah expressing satisfaction over the pace and quality of construction.

The Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said the upgrading works are progressing well, with contractors completing key phases according to schedule.

He said the stadium is undergoing significant transformation, with even night works being carried out to ensure progress remains on track.

“Sometimes even at night the stadium is lit up, because work is still ongoing. That means the contractor is working on schedule,” he told a press conference today.

He added that he was briefed on the project’s progress before Hari Raya and was pleased with the level of development achieved so far.

Abdul Karim said the stadium is undergoing extensive changes, including a complete overhaul of seating arrangements and other facilities.

He noted that the upgraded venue will feature full seating installation across all sections, unlike before when only certain areas, such as the VIP section, were equipped with chairs.

“The development of the Sarawak Stadium is quite massive. The whole seating place will have chairs, and the overall look will be completely different,” he said.

He added that the project involves substantial upgrades, making the venue almost entirely new despite being on the same site.

However, he expressed concern over potential cost fluctuations for materials, particularly seating components, due to global developments in the Middle East.

Abdul Karim said he remains confident that the project will be completed successfully, with the contractor performing well and delivering according to plan.

The Sarawak Stadium upgrade is part of preparations for the 2027 SEA Games, which Sarawak will co-host.
