SELANGOR: Sarawak’s preparations for the 2028 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Kelantan will begin with a comprehensive review of this year’s campaign, as the state looks to build on its fourth-place finish in Selangor.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said a post-mortem would be conducted to identify areas for improvement before planning the next phase of preparations.
“We will conduct a post-mortem after this to identify weaknesses in various aspects.
“What is certain is that we also need to wait for reports from all the sports associations involved,” he said.
Abdul Karim said the exercise was a standard practice after every SUKMA and would involve assessing performances across the contingent to determine where improvements could be made ahead of the next edition.
The review will also help shape Sarawak’s preparations for SUKMA 2028, with the state aiming to strengthen its challenge in Kelantan.
SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026 concluded on Sunday after 10 days of competition involving 37 sports.
Sarawak finished fourth overall with 41 gold, 40 silver and 62 bronze medals, collecting 143 medals in total.
Hosts Selangor topped the standings with 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals (245 overall), followed by Federal Territories (51-54-52, 157 medals) and Terengganu (43-44-36, 123 medals).
Abdul Karim said feedback from the various sports associations would play an important role in helping the state identify strengths to build on and weaknesses to address before the next SUKMA campaign.
