KUCHING: Acacia plants are being hailed as the next renewable energy source, paving the way for Sarawak to mitigate global climate change effectively.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted the potential of acacia plants as a renewable energy solution, saying that Sarawak’s favorable weather conditions enable the cyclic cultivation of acacia to produce biomass feedstock.
He expressed optimism about the partnership between Acacia Power and Italy-based Nextchem SpA, believing it would merge Sarawak’s expertise in acacia cultivation with Italy’s advanced technologies.
“With our rich weather, acacia grows well and can be harvested in cycles for renewable biomass feedstock. In just three to four years, it matures, allowing a continuous and sustainable production model.

“With your long-standing expertise and advanced technologies like AI, I believe productivity will significantly improve. Together, we can face the challenges of global climate change.”
He made these remarks during the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Acacia Power Sdn Bhd and Nextchem SpA of Italy at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) today.
The collaboration seeks to deliver efficient and innovative solutions, aligning with Sarawak’s ambition to position renewable energy as a fundamental pillar of its socio-economic growth.
Abang Johari stressed the role of technology and innovation in advancing such initiatives, noting that partnerships like these are essential for addressing global environmental challenges.
“I am sure with your expertise and with our experience in planting acacia we can meet the challenges of global climate change.
“With that, I hope for the best between Sarawak and Italy. We are just a small emerging economy from Borneo, but we can work together,” he added.
