KUCHING: Students are urged to combine academic excellence with strong moral values and the right attitude, with nation-building remaining a top priority as Sarawak continues its drive for human capital development.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian made the remarks while officiating the 30th Senior Middle and 53rd Junior Middle School Graduation Ceremony at SM Min Lit Batu Kawa recently.

“Facilities and equipment help, but it is academic achievement, moral values and the right attitude that determine a student’s future,” he said.

“Both school and family education remain central to a child’s long-term development.”

Highlighting the state government’s commitment to education, Dr Sim noted initiatives such as the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Policy, set to begin next year, and financial aid schemes providing up to RM15,000 annually for students from low-income households.

“I urge the youth to treasure these opportunities and return to contribute to Sarawak’s development,” he added.

On local development, he said that Batu Kawa is progressing rapidly, with improvements in public amenities, educational facilities, road networks, and community planning, driven by talent cultivation, education, and industry growth.

“With more outstanding youth returning to serve the community, Batu Kawa’s future will be even brighter,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, principal Lai Soh Ching congratulated the graduates and acknowledged the Senior Middle Three cohort for their contributions, including organising a teachers’ appreciation dinner and donating graduation robes for future batches.

“I am proud to see many students transform into confident speakers, leaders and organisers,” she said.

Lai also highlighted several school achievements this year, including the opening of a new science laboratory, upgrades to the culinary and baking room, and a charity bazaar that raised nearly RM140,000.

She added that next year, a 24 Festive Drums Team will be officially established to provide broader cultural and artistic learning opportunities.

Looking ahead, Lai said planned upgrades for 2026 include an LED stage screen, a roofed basketball court, large ceiling fans for the hall, and a new broadcast system for the academic block.

She encouraged the graduates to move forward with responsibility and gratitude, adding that the school will always remain their “warmest home”.
