KUCHING: The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) has proposed that the Sarawak Government explore the feasibility of establishing a free port or free trade zone in the state.

ACCCIS President, Kong Chiong Ung, said the proposal aligns with the state’s ongoing infrastructure developments, including the upcoming deep seaport and international airport at Tanjung Embang.

He explained there is great potential to be tapped, especially with Indonesia’s capital being relocated to Kalimantan, making Borneo an increasingly strategic location in the region.

“This is a timely moment to pursue such an initiative. A free trade zone would enhance regional integration, attract high-quality foreign investment, and open new markets for local businesses.

“Thus, it would help them connect to global supply chains and strengthen Sarawak’s economic and geopolitical standing,” he said.

He said this during ACCCIS’ 60th anniversary gala dinner held at the Imperial Hotel here last night.

Kong also called upon the state government to further strengthen local procurement policies to ensure small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state are given genuine opportunities to participate in relevant supply chains such as the green economy and sustainable energy.

“This is important so they too can benefit from the growth and prosperity of our state,” he said.

He added that the chamber is also paying close attention to the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI).

“In today’s rapidly evolving global landscape, AI has become a formidable and often unseen competitor, transforming business models across industries.

“ACCCIS recognises that without proactive efforts to support skill development and mindset transformation, the consequences will reach far beyond individual enterprises – they could weaken the overall resilience and future of our economic ecosystem,” he said.

In this regard, he said the chamber remains strongly committed to promoting training and capacity-building programmes, supporting forward-looking government policies and helping businesses embrace emerging trends so they can stay ahead in an increasingly fast-paced world.

“At the same time, we are actively nurturing young talent, channelling the wisdom and energy of the next generation to become a vital driving force in Sarawak’s continued development,” said Kong.

Earlier, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari officiated at the dinner, which was also attended by Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
