MIRI: Women, Childhood, and Community Well-being Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said it is important to have comprehensive data to ensure effective assistance for flood-affected communities across the state.
Speaking on Sunday after visiting a temporary relief centre at the Kampung Tanjung Batu community hall here, Fatimah highlighted that information on those impacted by the floods, including those who have relocated and those who have chosen to remain in their homes, is vital for government response efforts.
“We have gathered records of those who have moved, as well as those who have remained in their homes. This updated information allows us to assess the types of aid required and the amount of food that needs to be distributed,” she stated.
Fatimah stressed the importance of compiling data on property damage, including school supplies and educational necessities for children.
She noted that many parents had already purchased school materials in preparation for the new academic term, which is set to begin in two weeks.
“A mother shared her experience with me — she had bought everything needed for her child’s schooling, only to have it affected by the floods. This type of information is crucial for us to consider, particularly in terms of early school assistance and educational support,” she added.
Fatimah assured that all collected data would be presented at the upcoming Sarawak Disaster Management Committee meeting, where state authorities and relevant agencies would assess the situation and determine the necessary support measures.
“We ensure that all facts are put on the table, with input from disaster response agencies and district-level authorities. Based on this, a decision will be made to provide the best possible assistance,” she said.
