KUCHING: Sarawak’s ambition to become a regional hub for green hydrogen received a major boost with a courtesy visit by ACWA Power Founder and Chairman, Mohammad Abunayyan, to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, reaffirming the company’s strategic partnership with SEDC Energy (SEDCE).
SEDCE said the visit underscores ACWA Power’s commitment to emulate its flagship NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia, bringing similar scale and ambition to Sarawak.
It also said that NEOM is the world’s largest green hydrogen project currently under development, targeting 4 GW of renewable power to produce 600 tonnes per day of green hydrogen.
“The USD8.4 billion project is designed to position Saudi Arabia as a leader in the global hydrogen economy, an aspiration that aligns closely with Sarawak’s clean energy vision.
“This initiative also aligns with ACWA Power’s recent USD10 billion investment commitment to Malaysia, announced during the ASEAN-GCC Summit in May 2025, with Sarawak poised to benefit substantially through infrastructure, technology and economic spillovers,” said SEDCE in a statement following the visit on today at Satria Pertiwi Complex here.
In Sarawak, ACWA Power and SEDCE are jointly exploring the development of a green hydrogen facility powered by up to 4 GW of captive renewable energy, delivering 2 GW of electrolyser capacity for export and domestic decarbonisation.
ACWA Power and SEDCE entered into this agreement last year establishing the basis for this collaboration.
In parallel, both parties have also been actively in discussion with Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) to explore floating solar projects in Batang Ai and Murum Hydropower Dam.
“Both ACWA Power and SEDCE have also reached out to Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications (MUT) and Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESTY) to ensure regulatory alignment.
“This cooperation forms part of ACWA Power’s wider USD10 billion investment commitment to Malaysia, announced during the ASEAN-GCC Summit in May 2025, positioning Sarawak at the forefront of renewable energy development in the region,” it said.
It added that the collaboration aligns with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (HETR), and reflects the deepening clean energy cooperation between Malaysia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
