KUCHING: Sarawak Tribune’s Aden Nagrace and Caroline Jackson were among the standout recipients of the Premier of Sarawak’s Special Appreciation Award, in recognition of their decades-long dedication to upholding ethical and impactful journalism.

The awards were presented by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof during a grand dinner in conjunction with the state-level National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2025 and the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025, held at Riverside Majestic Hotel last night (Wednesday, July 2).

Aden Nagrace, the Editor-in-Chief of Sarawak Tribune, expressed his deep gratitude and humility upon receiving the award.

“I am deeply humbled and honoured to be selected as one of the recipients of the Premier of Sarawak’s Special Appreciation Award,” he said.

“My heartfelt appreciation goes to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Sarawak government, Deputy Minister Datuk Abdullah Saidol, and the dedicated teams at UKAS and AZAM Sarawak, as well as the members of the award selection panel for this meaningful honour.”

Aden also extended his thanks to the organising team behind SMeC 2025, the Sarawak Tribune management led by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir, his colleagues past and present, and fellow journalists who have supported him throughout his career.

“However, this recognition is not mine alone.

“It belongs to everyone who upholds the principles of truthful, responsible and ethical journalism, values that remain ever more vital in this era shaped by artificial intelligence and rapid technological change,” he said.

Meanwhile, Caroline Jackson, currently a Sub-Editor at Sarawak Tribune and a respected figure in the industry with nearly 40 years of experience, also shared her heartfelt reflections on her journalistic journey.

“It’s truly humbling and inspiring to see how my journey as a journalist has come full circle after almost four decades in the field.

“I am truly grateful and honoured to have received this award and for the recognition given by the Sarawak state government,” she expressed.

Caroline described the history of journalism, from typing stories on reliable typewriters and creating black-and-white images in darkrooms as a young reporter in the mid-1980s to adjusting to real-time digital news delivery fuelled by information and communications technology (ICT) and mobile reporting.

She also recalled her time with the Brunei-based Borneo Bulletin and her long tenure with BERNAMA, where she served for over 22 years as a reporter, Sarawak bureau chief, and assistant chief sub-editor, both in Sarawak and at Wisma BERNAMA in Kuala Lumpur.

“As reporters on assignments, we could send our reports from literally anywhere, whether deep in rural Sarawak or from overseas.

“It was an exciting time as BERNAMA catered to clients in print, broadcast and social media,” she expressed.

Caroline is also the recipient of the Pingat Ahli Bintang Sarawak (ABS) in 2009 and Pingat Perkhidmatan Bakti (PPB) in 2013, a rare honour indeed among the local media fraternity.

Today, as a sub-editor at the Sarawak Tribune, Caroline finds great fulfilment in mentoring young journalists and interns, helping them hone their skills and navigate the challenges of the profession.

“Positive and responsible journalism can have a tremendous impact on society, and it is important to nurture the next generation,” said Caroline, who is also a former chairman of the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) Sarawak chapter.
