MIRI: The SK433 Adong Kechil West (AKW) onshore gas field here could become Sarawak’s next gas production site, potentially contributing to the state’s revenue stream.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said early signs point to the presence of significant gas reserves in the area, though it remains under exploration.
However, Abang Johari said it was still too early to confirm the start of any production, as further studies are needed.
“There are ongoing exploration activities in Adong, and indications show there may be gas reserves.
“We need to conduct a proper study first. If it proves viable, we will proceed. For now, there are only indications of potential gas reserves,” he told a press conference after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for the Marina Bridge project here today.
Earlier, the Premier said Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) is currently conducting studies to upgrade the state’s electricity grid from 275 kilovolt (kV) to 500kV.
He said the move aims to ensure Sarawak can generate sufficient energy by 2030 to 2035, not only for domestic consumption but also to supply the wider ASEAN region via the ASEAN Power Grid network.
