KUCHING: The development of the Adong Kechil West (AKW) oil and gas block in Miri is officially in motion, with its production set to commence next year, following a strategic meeting between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS).

This marks a significant milestone for Sarawak’s onshore energy ambitions, as the SK433 AKW block transitions from successful drilling to the development phase.

The project’s launch will pave the way for critical infrastructure to be built, including road access, crude oil transfer terminals, and a gas power plant — all of which are expected to benefit nearby communities and drive broader socio-economic development in northern Sarawak.

Senior vice president of Sarawak Resource Management at PETROS Datuk Abang Arabi Abang Narudin said the commencement of AKW was the result of strong collaboration with government agencies and stakeholders.

“This is an important step forward, and we are ready to support Sarawak’s vision of building a robust and sustainable energy sector,” he said.

He added that the AKW project is also a starting point for further onshore ventures across Sarawak, with PETROS set to begin Enhanced Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometer (eFTG) surveys in Q2 2025.

“These surveys will guide future exploration and development across regions such as Bintulu, Mukah, Marudi, Lawas and others,” he added.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also second Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development and Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment.

The commencement of the Adong Kechil West project is not only a testament to Sarawak’s growing capabilities in onshore energy development — it is a signal that the state is ready to lead in shaping Malaysia’s next phase of energy growth.
