KUCHING: The installation of a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Tabuan Laru Family Club signals a key step forward in enhancing safety for its growing sports community.

The AED, now installed in the club’s central canteen area, provides rapid response capability in the event of a cardiac emergency, supporting a wide range of activities at the venue, including pickleball, swimming, badminton, and crossfit.

CPR and AED trainer Johnny Kua said the initiative comes in response to the growing importance of providing life-saving equipment at sports venues, especially as more individuals of all ages participate in high-energy activities.

“It highlights the club community’s commitment to the safety of everyone involved, from recreational players to serious athletes,” he said recently.

He noted that the AED has been placed in a central and easily accessible location at the club’s canteen area, allowing quick access to the device for anyone using the club’s four main sports amenities.

“Whether participants are hitting the pickleball courts, enjoying a swim, or taking part in a crossfit session, the AED’s availability ensures that life-saving measures can be taken immediately, should the need arise,” he added.

Alongside the installation of the AED, the club also held a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED awareness session, organised by the vendor, Pflege Medical Supplies Sdn. Bhd. This was aimed at empowering community members with the basic knowledge and confidence needed to act in the event of a cardiac emergency.

“We want everyone participating in sports to feel safe and confident. As activities like pickleball and badminton grow in popularity, it’s essential that we make life-saving equipment accessible and equipped the community with knowledge and training to respond to emergency cases.

“With AEDs strategically placed, we are doing our part to ensure that athletes, whether beginners or seasoned, are protected in case of emergencies.

“We hope to create a culture of safety and preparedness, not just by installing AEDs in sports venues, but also comprehensive CPR training throughout Kuching and beyond,” he explained.

Kua also expressed hope to collaborate with partners to expand AED coverage to more locations, particularly religious centres, tourist spots, rural areas and longhouses — places where access to emergency medical services can be limited.
