KUCHING: Sarawak government has given assurance that the airfares of the state-owned airline, AirBorneo will be affordable, aligning with the goal of enhancing connectivity and providing more efficient air services.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this initiative has been the state government’s priority since taking over the airline from MASwings.
“AirBorneo is the first airline owned by the Sarawak government, and its business model is still in the planning stages. It depends on how we choose to manage it, and this cannot be disclosed to external parties.
“However, airfare is indeed our main focus. It should not be too expensive,” he said.
Abang Johari, who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president said this during the party’s 16 Triennial General Meeting (TGM) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Saturday.
He added that the state government is conducting studies on redesigning the aircraft’s livery and colours, as well as developing the best strategies to strengthen AirBorneo’s position in both the domestic and international aviation industries.
“I have read various public opinions on social media regarding this state airline, particularly concerning the aircraft’s design and colours.
“Some have suggested different colour schemes. Similarly, there are those who support it and others who criticise it.
“However, it must be understood that taking over MASwings was not an easy task. Lengthy discussions and negotiations took place before a decision was made.
“Therefore, we must conduct a comprehensive and detailed study to ensure we can provide the best service in the future,” he said.
He also said initially, AirBorneo’s flight routes would focus on Sabah and Sarawak before expanding to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and later to more international destinations such as Hong Kong.
