KUCHING: It was a golden strike for Sarawak at the 22nd Malaysian Deaf Games (SOPMA XXII) 2025, as Agan Ballang Kapong and Sia Chew Ing powered their way to victory in the men’s and women’s individual tenpin bowling events.
Competing at Megalanes E-Mart in Batu Kawa here, the home state athletes rose to the occasion, bringing loud cheers from supporters as they delivered a clean sweep of the individual titles.
In the Men’s Individual category, Agan showcased remarkable consistency across six games, striking his way to the gold medal.
His performance not only secured victory but also reinforced Sarawak’s reputation as a traditional bowling powerhouse.
The silver medal went to Federal Territory’s Syabil Azam Syamsul-Azam, who stayed close behind with a strong challenge, while Muhammad Firdaus Ahmad of Pulau Pinang clinched the bronze medal.
Sarawak’s momentum continued in the Women’s Individual event, where Sia Chew Ing dominated the competition with a commanding pinfall tally to secure the top spot.
Irene L. Gubud of Sabah claimed silver after a spirited effort, while Federal Territory’s Nursyafiqah Ibrahim rounded off the podium with bronze.
The medals were presented by Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, who congratulated the winners and commended all athletes for their dedication and perseverance.
For Sarawak, the double victory marked a significant boost in its overall campaign, with the contingent aiming for eight gold medals at SOPMA XXII 2025.
Backed by 73 participants, comprising 47 athletes and 26 officials, the host State is determined to make the most of home support to deliver standout performances across various sports.
Inside the bowling centre, the atmosphere was one of celebration and unity, with teammates and fans rallying behind every roll.
The golden feats by Agan and Sia not only lifted Sarawak’s medal tally but also inspired their fellow athletes to rise to the challenge in the days ahead.
