MIRI: Various enforcement and disaster management agencies have been mobilised in the Miri Division to prevent the risk of open burning, particularly in peatland areas, as the area faces prolonged hot weather and worsening haze conditions.
Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, said he had personally informed the Chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, about the current situation in Miri during his recent visit in conjunction with Sarawak Day celebrations.
“Datuk Amar has instructed the Miri Divisional Resident to immediately mobilise the relevant agencies to patrol land areas and take swift action to prevent fires, particularly in identified ‘hotspot’ areas,” he said in a statement.
Lee also said a meeting is being held with the Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee to strengthen coordination among all related departments and agencies for the immediate implementation of measures in high-risk areas.
At the same time, he urged the public and plantation operators to remain vigilant and monitor their respective areas to prevent any open burning from occurring.
“Any early signs of fire must be dealt with immediately. We cannot afford to be complacent. The public is also urged to fully cooperate and report to the Fire and Rescue Department immediately if they see any suspicious fire or smoke,” he said.
He also advised residents to stay updated on the Air Pollution Index (API) readings and prioritise their health, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues.
“If the API reading reaches unhealthy levels, avoid outdoor activities and adhere to advice issued by the Ministry of Health,” he added.
He stressed that community cooperation is crucial in preventing environmental disasters during this dry season.
