KUCHING: Immediate response and coordinated efforts from various agencies have helped residents in Batu Kawa to recover after a rare and violent thunderstorm recently struck the area, damaging homes in Desa Wira and blocking roads with fallen trees.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Batu Kawah assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian extended his heartfelt appreciation to all those involved in the emergency response, including the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), Sarawak Energy (SEB), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Team Dr Sim from N14 Batu Kawah Service Centre and local community leaders.
“The Team Dr Sim from N14 Batu Kawah Service Centre, Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Kho Teck Wan and local community leaders were among the first to visit the affected sites after the incident,” he said in a statement today.
“Together with community leaders, they assessed the situation on the ground and promptly coordinated with relevant authorities to carry out clean up works, including the removal of fallen trees and other post disaster efforts.”
Dr Sim expressed relief that no injuries or casualties occurred despite the severity of the storm, while also voicing concern over the increasingly erratic weather patterns.
“Climate change is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Prolonged heat waves can be suddenly interrupted by powerful storms with unusually intense rainfall and wind speeds,” he said.
He noted that most homes with damaged roofs have undergone basic repairs to allow families to return safely.
The Padawan Municipal Council has also provided Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) bins in the Desa Wira area to assist residents in clearing large volumes of storm debris, including damaged household items and fallen tree branches.
“This incident demonstrated the resilience, unity and mutual support within our community during times of crisis. It also showcased the efficiency of our local agencies in responding to natural disasters,” he said.
Dr Sim gave his assurance that efforts will continue to strengthen the community’s preparedness for future challenges.
