KUCHING: A collaborative effort between Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Sarawak Department of Agriculture (DOA) is underway to establish a comprehensive action plan for the management and conservation of ‘ikan terubok’ (toli shad or river shad) in Sarawak.
The initiative was among key matters discussed during a working visit led by SFC general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran to the department here recently.
According to a statement posted on SFC’s Facebook, both parties deliberated on strategic collaboration to formulate the Sarawak Terubok Comprehensive Action Plan, including the potential gazettement of breeding areas for two ‘terubok’ species as designated Terubok Sanctuaries.
Discussions also explored strengthening research on the iconic fish, as well as the possibility of organising an international ‘terubok’ conference in the future.
During the meeting, SFC delegates were briefed by research officers on Sarawak’s achievements in ‘terubok’ breeding studies, which have been ongoing since 2012.
The session further touched on efforts to empower local communities involved in the ‘terubok’ industry, with the aim of elevating the sector to an international level.
