BINTULU: The Sarawak Government is committed to transforming the agriculture sector towards digitalisation, particularly through artificial intelligence (AI).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said industry players must keep pace with technological advancements to boost economic output.

He asserted that AI could provide solutions to problems faced by farmers and livestock breeders, including food production.

“We must take into account the equipment used in the food industry. We want to change this culture, which will add value to what we are implementing.

“That is why the Sarawak Government established the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC), which covers all sectors including agriculture.

“The people of Sarawak must have knowledge if we are determined to transform the state on par with countries such as Denmark, Sweden and Finland,” he said.

He said this when officiating the Sarawak Agrofest 2025 at Bintulu Old Airport here today.

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, who was also present, stressed that adopting and adapting new technologies would allow Sarawak to match advanced countries in the agro sector.

He said there was no way the people could develop the sector without technology and mechanisation.

“Physical labour alone is no longer enough to transform the lives of our farmers, breeders and fishermen. Therefore, we have to work hard, to see and to learn,” he said.

Additionally, Dr Rundi said agriculture is now an attractive profession that could bring high returns if managed correctly.

He noted that most players in Sarawak were ageing, and urged the younger generation to contribute to the industry.

“We need to draw the interest of young people – those who are trainable, energetic, and fresh graduates. Do not just look for jobs, but learn how to create opportunities.

“One way to generate income is through agriculture, be it through modern farming, precision farming, or the agro parks that we have developed.

“Use them, learn from them, and work with the Department of Agriculture to understand new technologies and marketable opportunities,” he said.
