KUCHING: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a key component across many sectors in Sarawak, particularly in administration, automating repetitive tasks and enhancing efficiency in routine operations.

Systems powered by AI now manage licence applications, form processing, and data management, allowing staff to focus on higher-priority tasks, reducing errors, and increasing overall productivity.

“This programme reflects Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) commitment to empower youth and promote technology adoption,” said Saberkas president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, in a speech read by Aerospace, Digital and Green Energy Academy chief academic officer Dr Dayang Hanani Abang Ibrahim.

Abdul Karim said this during the closing of the Sarawak Saberkas Southern Zone Artificial Intelligence

(AI) Literacy Programme at Auditorium CENTEXS here on Monday (Dec 8).

Saberkas Zone Selatan 1 members, together with CENTEXS students, actively participated in the programme, which drew around 75 participants.

The event was organised by the Saberkas Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation in collaboration with Saberkas Batu Kawa Branch to promote AI awareness.

“Three AI-focused presentations were delivered by ICats Sarawak, TEGAS and CENTEXS, complemented by a guided learning visit to the CENTEXS TestBed facility relevant to practical AI applications.

“AI, a branch of science enabling machines to mimic human intelligence, incorporates machine learning, allowing systems to learn and adapt, thereby becoming smarter over time.

“Its adoption is vital in solving complex tasks, saving human time and effort, and supporting competitiveness in the modern digital economy while complementing human capabilities,” Abdul Karim said.

He added that AI also improves user experience through chatbots and automated response systems, providing rapid assistance and personalised interaction, increasing public satisfaction without direct human intervention.

“By reducing the need for manual labour, AI helps lower operational costs and improves accuracy, minimising costly mistakes in administrative and organisational processes.”

He said that the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2018 outlines plans to build secure, resilient, and scalable digital infrastructure to maximise AI potential across multiple sectors.

“Sarawak will establish an AI Centre to lead initiatives including AI for Smart Agriculture, using analytics to optimise crop yields and promote sustainable practices in farming.

“The state has achieved global recognition with KETEQ AI, the world’s first AI-based power conversion device, fully developed by local talent under the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030 initiative.”

He added that Sarawak also launched DeepSAR, an AI model capable of automatic translation between local and global languages, enhancing tourism and digital communication.

“Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad has unveiled the Tap & Go Smart Store, Malaysia’s first fully AI-operated retail outlet, enabling automatic payment through the SBOX AI wallet.”
