KUCHING: The upcoming Sarawak Cancer Hospital will be designed to meet the needs of the artificial intelligence (AI) era, ensuring that it remains future-proof and capable of supporting advanced healthcare technologies.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the new hospital, expected to be completed by 2030, would not be “just another hospital” but one that incorporates digital and AI elements into its planning and operations.

“We are at the happening time of the AI era. A hospital planned 10 years ago may be modern, but it may not be future-proof or AI-proof,” he said during the 3rd Borneo Liver, Pancreas and Biliary Tract Cancers Conference on Sunday.

Dr Sim said the state government has been working closely with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and digital experts to ensure the hospital is designed to adapt to future technological advancements.

“Whether we like it or not, AI is going to be around. That’s why we must plan ahead to make sure our facilities are future-ready,” he added.

Dr Sim thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for supporting the development of the Sarawak Cancer Hospital and for expediting its implementation.

“I want to thank our Prime Minister for his support and for accelerating the process. This is a message to Kuala Lumpur, not to me, because the project is implemented by Kuala Lumpur.

“I will continue to work with the federal government and pressure them to ensure it is completed as soon as possible,” he said.
