KUCHING: Sarawak could one day develop its own artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot, facilitating digital conversations between Sarawakians and the global community, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He expressed hope that the state could create a model similar to DeepSeek, China’s leading AI initiative.
“I hope we can have a DeepSar – a DeepSarawak of which is founded by a Sarawakian. It would feature content unique to Sarawak and become another digital conversation platform between Sarawakians and the world.
“This may be just a dream for now, but perhaps it will happen in the future – not during my time, but maybe in 2030, 2035, or 2040.
“What is important first is that we are able to produce (the talents) and ensure that we connect every area of Sarawak with digital connectivity,” he said.
He said this during Sarawak Multimedia Authority’s (SMA) 2025 Lunar New Year Dinner at Sheraton Hotel here last night (Feb 7).
Abang Johari also noted the importance of AI-driven data consolidation in shaping economic activities, adding that AI is now guiding various processes and decision-making.
“For instance, you go to DeepSeek and ask the AI to provide details about Sarawak. They give you a long description.
“In other words, they divide all the various sectors we have in Sarawak, and with that we can understand the state’s potential and what we should do based on the resources we have,” he said.
