KUCHING: Aid programmes that involve collaboration between the government, private sector, and local leadership have proven effective in easing the burden of underprivileged communities.
Women, Family and Community Development, Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said such initiatives reflect strong social cohesion and compassion among Sarawakians of different races and religions.
“Programmes like this are significant as they showcase the spirit of togetherness, concern, and close cooperation between the private sector and local leadership to ensure the welfare of the community is always prioritised,” she said.
She was speaking at a pre-Christmas donation ceremony for her Santubong constituency, organised by the Sarawak branch of the Persatuan Pengimport dan Peniaga Kenderaan Melayu Malaysia (PEKEMA) at Kampung Sungai Agas Baru, Jalan Matang.
Nancy stressed that these efforts are not one-off events but part of ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing the challenges faced by those in need, while also nurturing human values and societal harmony.
Meanwhile, President of PEKEMA Sarawak, Datuk Ismail Abang Saufi, said the donation programme was part of the association’s annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment.
A total of 300 food baskets were distributed to residents in the Santubong constituency.
“The programme reflects PEKEMA Sarawak’s dedication to social care, unity, and harmony among the people of Sarawak, regardless of race or religion,” he added.
He also emphasised that the spirit of sharing and helping one another promoted by PEKEMA forms an essential foundation for the well-being of a multi-ethnic society.
“The association hopes that these contributions will lighten the recipients’ burdens and bring joy and meaning to the upcoming festive season,” he said.
Following the ceremony, Nancy and the PEKEMA team visited one of the recipients, Brayan Rangga, a physically disabled individual, at his residence in Bandar Baru Samariang.
The visit highlighted the personal touch and genuine concern shown by both government and private sector representatives in reaching out to those in need.
