KUCHING: Kuching City FC’s 1-1 draw with Terengganu FC exposed the challenges of limited squad depth and injury setbacks, according to head coach, Aidil Sharin Sahak.
With key defenders sidelined and just three days to recover after their recent clash with Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), Aidil stressed the need for greater tactical maturity and for other players to step up in crucial moments.
The Super League match at Stadium Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin (SSMZA) saw Petrus Shitembi put The Cats ahead in the 44th minute, only for Terengganu substitute, Engku Muhammad Nur Shakir Engku Yacob, to equalise during stoppage time, ending the game 1-1.
“We know that it is not easy because we gave our maximum energy against JDT, and with only three days to recover, today was always going to be difficult.
“In the last game in Kuching, they beat us and fought hard. So, we expected a tough match,” said Aidil.
The coach highlighted the impact of injuries on the team’s performance, particularly in defence.
“Jimmy Raymond, our only natural right back, was injured and couldn’t play. We had to rely on Filemon Anyie, who is not a natural right back, but he did a good job,” he said during the post-match press conference.
Aidil also took responsibility for the result and emphasised the lessons his team must learn.
“We have to learn and mature in how we manage the game when we are leading 1-0 in extra time. It’s not easy, but I don’t blame any players. I am the coach, and I take responsibility for the result,” he stressed.
On the injury front, striker Jordan Mintah remains under medical supervision and is unlikely to return until late January.
“Jordan has lost significant weight and needs time to regain his energy. We will support him fully, and we wish him a fast recovery,” Aidil added.
Looking ahead, Kuching City FC will benefit from a two-week break before their next league match against Melaka.
Aidil said the team will use this period to address weaknesses and build internal readiness among the squad.
