KUCHING: The launch of AirBorneo marks a historic milestone for Sarawak and reflects the state’s growing confidence and progress.

Political analyst Datuk Peter Minos described the sight of an AirBorneo aircraft in the skies as a symbol of Sarawak flying with pride and dignity, noting that the establishment of a Sarawak-owned airline was once unimaginable.

“Who would have thought that by 2026 Sarawak would own its own airline?

“This was beyond my contemplation, even in my wildest dreams,” he said in a statement.

Looking ahead, Minos expressed optimism that Sarawak’s aviation ambitions would expand further with the proposed new international airport at Tanjung Embang, Asajaya, which is expected to be completed by 2030.

He said the new airport could position AirBorneo to operate regional and potentially international routes.

“Perhaps one day we may even see direct flights from Kuching to London. That would be truly remarkable,” he added.

Minos highlighted that airlines play a crucial role in improving connectivity, boosting business activities, strengthening tourism and fostering unity and prosperity, adding that AirBorneo has the potential to deliver these benefits to Sarawak with sustained commitment.

Reflecting on Sarawak’s development, he pointed to several state-led initiatives that have contributed to growing pride among Sarawakians, including the establishment of Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS), Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), free tertiary education, Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), a commercial bank, four Sarawak-owned universities and the state television station, TVS.

“With all these firsts, Sarawakians cannot help but feel proud and happy,” he said.

Minos also expressed hope that AirBorneo would offer affordable fares for Sarawakians, particularly during festive seasons, contrasting this with what he described as steep and burdensome ticket prices imposed by other airlines.

He noted that Sarawak’s achievements have helped change perceptions over time, adding that the state is now on track to be more advanced and progressive by 2030.

“There is a growing confidence among Sarawakians — that what others have, we too can have, and what others can achieve, so can we. That is the Sarawak confidence,” he said.
