SINGAPORE: The proposed direct flights between Sarawak and Singapore via AirBorneo is set to enhance mobility and open up new tourism opportunities.

Singapore’s Minister for Social and Family Development, Masagos Zulkifli Masagos Mohamad, said direct flights to Sarawak’s popular destinations would attract Singaporean visitors.

“With these direct connections, I am confident Singaporeans will travel to Sarawak to explore and enjoy its natural beauty,” he said after meeting Sarawak’s Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, here today.

He added that the initiative could also strengthen economic, cultural and social ties between the two regions.

AirBorneo, Sarawak’s new state-owned airline, is expected to play a key role in opening regional routes, supporting the state government’s efforts to boost tourism and trade.

It was previosly reported in October that Sarawak is planning to launch direct flight routes through its new airline, AirBorneo, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and trade connectivity with Singapore.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg previously said that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to boost the tourism, logistics and cross-border trade sectors, particularly through the role of the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS).

“One of the areas of cooperation we are discussing with Singapore is the tourism sector,” he stated.

“That is why we have STATOS here, and we also hope that Singapore will grant landing rights to AirBorneo.”
