SEBUYAU: The Sarawak Government will continue to keep AirBorneo fares affordable to ensure air travel remains accessible for Sarawakians.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the RM375 promotional fare had helped stabilise the market after ticket prices previously surged to between RM700 and RM800 during festive seasons.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining the fare to ease the financial burden on Sarawakians travelling home.

“As long as I am the Premier, I do not want AirBorneo to increase its fares.

“I fixed the fare at RM375 for a year without any changes. If other airlines want to compete, they are free to do so. The choice of airline is up to the client, up to the people, but at least I can stabilise the fare.

“Otherwise, one ticket could cost RM700 or RM800. That is only for one person, before paying for a spouse and children. How are people supposed to return home for Hari Raya or Gawai?” he said.

He said this at a press conference after officiating at the opening ceremony of the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge here today.

Abang Johari said AirBorneo was established to provide affordable air services and improve connectivity rather than maximise profits.

He said the RM375 fare included services such as checked baggage and meals, unlike some airlines that imposed additional charges.

“We did not establish AirBorneo to make profits. We established it to provide a service and give people the opportunity to remain connected with one another.

“It also enables Sarawakians working in Kuala Lumpur to return home and visit their parents.

“If we are blessed with greater resources, perhaps I can reduce the fare even further for the people of Sarawak,” he said.

Abang Johari also expressed confidence that AirBorneo would strengthen Sarawak’s economy by improving connectivity and supporting cargo movement and medical tourism.

“Leave the management of AirBorneo to us. It will not affect our economy. Instead, it will contribute to economic growth.

“We have many brothers and sisters from Indonesia seeking medical treatment in Kuching.

“We need the capacity, and we must manage the economy prudently. Our economy has to be organised properly,” he said.
