KUCHING: Sarawak is advancing its economic growth through major aviation and infrastructure projects, including AirBorneo and a new International Airport, while also developing its aerospace industry to boost connectivity, create jobs, and position itself as a regional economic hub.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg described these initiatives as key drivers for economic synergy that will reshape Sarawak’s economic landscape.

“These are not merely public investments. They represent a bold and calculated vision for Sarawak’s future,” he said during the Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) signing ceremony between the Sarawak government and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) for the formal acquisition of MASwings at a leading hotel here on Wednesday (Feb 12).

Abang Johari said the acquisition of MASwings and establishment of AirBorneo are expected to enhance connectivity, create jobs, improve infrastructure, support SMEs and contribute to Sarawak’s post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

The Premier stressed that these efforts would position Sarawak as a vibrant economic hub within Malaysia and the region.

The planned development of a new KIA is another significant step in Sarawak’s infrastructure strategy, and the new airport will feature state-of-the-art facilities and intermodal connections, further strengthening Sarawak’s logistics and trade operations.

As part of the state’s vision to become a net food exporter by 2030, the Premier emphasised the importance of improved air freight capabilities to support both domestic and international markets.

“These transformative steps will create a powerful economic synergy, propelling Sarawak towards prosperity and sustainability,’’ he added.

Looking ahead, Sarawak also aims to develop its aerospace industry, with plans to collaborate with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) such as Boeing, Airbus, COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China), Embraer, and ATR.

The Premier stated that any partners must bring high-value propositions to Sarawak and contribute to the development of the state’s aerospace sector in the long run.

“Sarawak is well-positioned to explore opportunities in aerospace, leveraging our potential as a satellite launching site and our trainable workforce,’’ he said, adding that strong partnerships with aircraft manufacturers and suppliers would be crucial.

Abang Johari urged government officials, business leaders and the community to work together in realising Sarawak’s economic agenda.

“Together, we can build an aviation and aerospace sector that not only supports our economic ambitions but also enhances the quality of life for all Sarawakians,’’ he said.
