SARATOK: Authorities have launched an investigation following a viral Reddit post of a mysterious object, resembling a Northrop B-2 Spirit bomber, flying over a longhouse here.

The photo, which was shared by Reddit user Anubiroz on the r/Sarawak subreddit and later highlighted in the news by Malay Mail on Jul 13, has sparked public interest and concern.

Saratok police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said initial observations suggest the object does resemble a B-2 bomber in flight, however, the authenticity of the photo has yet to be verified.

“We are working closely with other relevant agencies including the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate the possibility of airspace intrusion or the deliberate spread of false information that may cause public panic.

“Investigations also aim to determine the actual location where the photo was taken, identify the person who uploaded it, and establish the motive behind its circulation.

“We will not compromise with any individual who spreads unverified information or causes unnecessary alarm to the public through social media platforms,” he said in a statement.

He urged members of the public are urged not to speculate or continue sharing the said photo online.

Mathew warned that spreading false information can be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or services, which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, up to two years in prison, or both.

“Anyone with further information is urged to come forward and assist in the investigation by contacting me directly at 012-8854849,” he said.
